Meet the Salters Den Winner 2018

This year’s winner of the 2018 Salters Den competition is Perfect Plastics. The business receives a £2,500 cash prize and 12 months free Accountancy and Legal mentoring.

Perfect Plastics supplies 100% biodegradable drinking straws for bars, coffee shops and restaurants with the aim to help eradicate single use plastic, beginning with plastic straws. The business was founded by Lee Taylor and his brother Neil Taylor who are both very passionate about the environment and wanted to help people make an immediate difference to the world around them.

The straws which look and feel like traditional plastic straws, have a shelf life of up to three years when kept dry but are designed to decompose in as little as 120 days once disposed, compared to traditional straws which can take 500 years to dissolve! To achieve this, the straws have been developed using the same material and technology used in medical devices such as sutures (dissolving stiches), this allows the products to biodegrade while remaining non-toxic.

All the judges felt that the business demonstrated a large impact for environmental change and would have a positive impact on climate change. They were impressed with Lee and Neil’s hard work, using their pervious skills to push the business forward and the innovation behind the products.

Chris Smith, Head of Business Service at Howard Worth commented, “We were impressed with Lee’s hard work and ability to develop an innovative solution to a current environmental issue. He demonstrated enthusiasm and passion for the product with future plans already in motion to create new products, continuing to reduce plastic use. We look forward to seeing the business expand and grow.”

After he had been contacted with the result Lee said “We are absolutely delighted to have won the salters Den this year, we are very much looking forward to working with the partners involved in this competition. The prize we have won will enable us to expedite our plans over the next 12 months. Non-essential plastic usage is a blight on our society and we aim to help reduce this with our products. Winning this competition will ultimately enable us to reach a larger audience in a shorter time period. We would like to say a big thank you to everyone involved in this competition, We are lucky that we have local established businesses that are willing to put so much effort into offering new businesses such a comprehensive prize.”

Prizes were also awarded for second and third place. Second place was awarded to Lawrence Hill with his business Vegan Nutrition Store Ltd. The business supplies plant based food alternatives, specifically for Vegan diets and will receive 6 months legal and accountancy mentoring.

This year’s standard of entry was so great the judges struggled to award 3rd place to a single company and instead awarded a joint 3rd place prize of 3 months legal and mentoring accountancy to My Curry Club, Indian & Bangladeshi cooking classes and Pretty Princess Cakes & Bakes, a Northwich based dessert bar.
